Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Widowhood presents significant emotional challenges.
  • Remarriage is a potential coping mechanism for bereaved individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine remarriage as a coping strategy for widowhood.
  • To understand the relationship between remarriage decisions and emotional well-being.

Main Methods:

  • Survey of 651 widows categorized by remarriage status (remarried, considered remarriage, not considered remarriage).
  • Statistical analysis controlling for age to assess current and retrospective concerns.

Main Results:

  • Remarried women reported fewer current concerns compared to non-remarried widows.
  • Women who eventually remarried recalled experiencing the most distress immediately after their husband's death.
  • Perceived change in concerns varied: remarried group felt fewer concerns, non-remarried group felt the same, and those considering remarriage felt more concerns.

Conclusions:

  • Remarriage can be a successful coping mechanism, leading to reduced distress after widowhood.
  • The decision to remarry may be influenced by the intensity of grief experienced.
  • Age is a relevant factor in remarriage decisions following spousal loss.
