Summary

Elderly adults show enhanced audio-visual integration but altered brain connectivity, with higher theta-band activity linked to attention. This suggests different brainwave bands support distinct sensory processing stages in aging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate global functional connectivity in elderly adults during dynamic audio-visual hand-held tool recognition.
  • To compare audio-visual integration abilities and brain activity patterns between healthy elderly and younger adults.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 21 healthy elderly adults and 21 healthy younger adults.
  • Administered a dynamic hand-held tool recognition task using high and low-intensity audio-visual stimuli.
  • Analyzed global functional connectivity, audio-visual integration window, and brainwave band activity (theta, alpha, beta, gamma).

Main Results:

  • Elderly adults demonstrated superior audio-visual integration ability (higher area under the curve) but a delayed and wider integration window.
  • Older adults exhibited higher theta-band functional connectivity but lower alpha-, beta-, and gamma-band connectivity compared to younger adults.
  • Theta- and alpha-band connectivity were higher for audio-visual stimuli versus unimodal stimuli, and under high-intensity versus low-intensity conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Increased theta-band functional connectivity in elderly adults is associated with heightened attention allocation during sensory processing.
  • Theta, alpha, beta, and gamma brainwave activities appear to play distinct roles in different stages of sensory perception.
