Detailed Structure and Function of Lymph Nodes

3.9K
Lymph nodes are bean-shaped structures that cluster along the lymphatic vessels in the inguinal, axillary, and cervical regions. Each node is divided into compartments by a capsule that extends trabeculae inward.
From a histological perspective, lymph nodes can be split into two main areas: the superficial cortex and the deep medulla. The outer cortex is populated by dendritic cells, macrophages, and B lymphocytes, which are densely packed into follicles. When these B-lymphocytes are presented...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Cervical lymphadenopathy can indicate serious underlying pathologies.
  • Diagnosis requires a systematic approach considering multiple potential causes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline the diagnostic considerations for cervical lymphadenopathy.
  • To highlight the differential diagnosis spectrum.

Main Methods:

  • Review of common causes of cervical lymphadenopathy.
  • Emphasis on differential diagnosis based on clinical presentation and patient factors.

Main Results:

  • Thyroid malignancy, lymphoma, and chronic infections are key differential diagnoses.
  • Diagnostic work-up complexity varies with comorbidities and physician experience.

Conclusions:

  • Cervical lymph node assessment is a critical first step in complex diagnostic pathways.
  • Accurate diagnosis relies on comprehensive evaluation and consideration of various conditions.
