Background:

  • The etiology of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains largely unknown.
  • Previous studies on NEC have not extensively investigated the role of enteric viruses, yielding inconsistent conclusions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between various enteric viruses and NEC in neonates.
  • To determine if the prevalence of specific viruses differs between neonates with NEC and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Stool specimens were collected from 51 neonates diagnosed with NEC and 39 healthy neonates.
  • Detection of rotavirus (RV), astrovirus (ASV), sapovirus, enterovirus (EV), adenovirus (ADV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and human bocavirus (HBoV) was performed.

Main Results:

  • Rotavirus A (RVA), ASV, EBV, and ADV were detected in both NEC and control groups.
  • EV and HBoV were exclusively found in the NEC group, while CMV was not detected in either group.
  • Adenovirus (ADV) and human bocavirus (HBoV) showed significantly higher prevalence in the NEC group (P = 0.011, P = 0.005, respectively), whereas RVA was less prevalent (P = 0.014).

Conclusions:

  • The role of enteric viruses in NEC is varied; some, like ASV, may be commensal.
  • The presence of ADV and EBV in NEC patients may be associated with disease severity.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the specific contributions of different viruses to NEC pathogenesis.
