Summary

Ostmann's fat pad (OFP) size does not differ between healthy ears and those with chronic otitis media with cholestatoma (COMwC). This study found no correlation between OFP dimensions and COMwC development in adults.

Background:

  • Chronic otitis media with cholestatoma (COMwC) is a complex middle ear disease.
  • Ostmann's fat pad (OFP) is an anatomical structure in the infratemporal fossa.
  • The role of OFP size in COMwC pathogenesis remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential differences in Ostmann's fat pad size between healthy ears and ears affected by COMwC.
  • To determine if OFP dimensions correlate with the presence of COMwC.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of pre-operative MRI scans from 26 patients with unilateral COMwC.
  • Measurement of OFP dimensions (M1, M2) and their ratio in both pathological and healthy ears.
  • Statistical comparison of OFP measurements between the two groups.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference was found in OFP size (M1, M2) between healthy and COMwC ears (P > 0.05).
  • The ratio of OFP dimensions (M1:M2) also showed no significant difference between the groups (P = 0.607).
  • Mean M1 was 2.04 mm in healthy ears vs. 2.03 mm in COMwC ears; Mean M2 was 9.57 mm vs. 9.86 mm.

Conclusions:

  • The size of Ostmann's fat pad is not a contributing factor in the development of chronic otitis media with cholestatoma in adults.
  • These findings suggest OFP dimensions do not influence COMwC pathogenesis.
