Background:

Shared decision-making (SDM) is crucial for quality patient care but is underutilized in vascular surgery.
Decision support tools have been developed to facilitate SDM between vascular surgeons and patients.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of decision support tools in improving SDM during vascular surgical consultations.
To assess the impact of these tools on treatment decisions for abdominal aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease, intermittent claudication, and varicose veins.

Main Methods:

A multicentre stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial involving 502 vascular surgical patients.
Intervention group received decision aids (websites), consultation cards, and practical training to promote SDM.
The 5-item OPTION instrument was used to score audio-recordings of consultations to measure improvement in SDM.

Main Results:

The OVIDIUS trial implemented decision support tools in clinical practice.
The study aimed to achieve a clinically relevant improvement of 10 points in SDM scores.
The stepped-wedge design ensured all centers implemented tools by study's end.

Conclusions:

The OVIDIUS trial assessed the real-world implementation and effectiveness of decision support tools in vascular surgery.
The study design facilitates widespread adoption of SDM principles across participating centers.
