Summary

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) using double-sided overlapping flaps showed similar surgical success and complication rates compared to non-flap methods. Both techniques are effective for treating tear duct obstruction with minimal issues.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Techniques
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Posterior mucus flap technique for dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) shows high success rates.
  • Bone overlapping and minimal postoperative obstruction are key benefits of newer DCR methods.
  • Evaluating novel flap techniques is crucial for optimizing DCR outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of endoscopic DCR utilizing a novel double-sided overlapping mucosal flap.
  • To compare surgical outcomes between double-sided overlapping flaps and non-flap techniques in DCR.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical trial involving 60 patients undergoing endoscopic DCR.
  • Patients were randomized into two groups: double-sided overlapping flap and non-flap endoscopic DCR.
  • Surgical success, postoperative pain, and complications were evaluated for both groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in surgical success rates or postoperative pain were observed between the groups (P>0.05).
  • Complications included hematoma (6.7% each group), bleeding (3.3% each group), and nasal secretion (10% intervention vs. 6.7% control).
  • No cases of tear duct obstruction or dacryocystitis were reported in either group.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic DCR with double-sided overlapping flaps yields comparable results to non-flap techniques.
  • Both endoscopic DCR methods, with and without the double-sided overlapping flap, are effective with limited complications.
  • The double-sided overlapping flap is a viable option for endoscopic DCR, offering similar efficacy to established methods.
