Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Current treatments for MS aim to manage symptoms and slow disease progression, but novel therapeutic approaches are needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in patients with multiple sclerosis.
  • To assess the impact of HBOT on clinical symptoms and immunological parameters in MS patients.

Main Methods:

  • 16 patients with multiple sclerosis underwent 25-30 HBOT sessions at 2 atmospheres absolute (ata) oxygen pressure.
  • Clinical status was assessed using the Kurtzke Disability Status Scale.
  • Immunological markers including immunoglobulin (IgG, IgM, IgA) levels, complement activity, and T and B lymphocyte counts were quantified.

  • 14 out of 16 patients experienced significant clinical improvement.
  • One patient showed worsening of symptoms after 15 exposures, leading to treatment cessation.
