Need for Self-Esteem01:27

Need for Self-Esteem

140
The human need for self-esteem has long intrigued psychologists, leading to the development of several theories that explore its evolutionary and functional significance. Among the most influential are the sociometer, hierometer, and terror management theories. Each offers a unique perspective on why people strive for self-worth and how it shapes behavior and social interaction.Sociometer TheoryAccording to sociometer theory, self-esteem functions as an internal gauge of social acceptance. It...

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.6K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Erikson's Theory on Socioemotional Development during Adolescence

842
Erik Erikson's fifth stage of psychosocial development, "identity versus role confusion," is crucial during adolescence (ages 12 to 18). In this stage, adolescents face the developmental task of forging a distinct personal identity, a process influenced by social, psychological, and biological changes typical of this period. Adolescents naturally explore different roles, behaviors, and ideologies as they navigate complex questions of self-concept, asking, "Who am I?" and "What is my place in...

Sources of Self-Esteem I: Family Experience

118
Self-esteem, a crucial component of psychological development, is significantly shaped by familial experiences. The early parent-child relationship serves as a foundational influence on a child's self-concept, with long-lasting effects extending into adolescence and adulthood.Parental Behaviors and Early Self-Esteem FormationEmpirical studies have identified four principal parental behaviors that foster healthy self-esteem in children. These include expressions of acceptance, affection, and...

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

645
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

185
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Suicidal behavior is a significant public health concern among adolescents.
  • Existing assessment tools may not be adequately tailored for the Spanish adolescent population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and validate a new, brief instrument, SENTIA, for assessing suicidal behavior in Spanish adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 1790 randomly selected Spanish students (mean age 15.70).
  • Exploratory factor analyses were used to determine the instrument's dimensional structure.
  • Reliability and gender differential functioning of items were assessed.

Main Results:

  • A bifactor model with a general suicidal behavior factor and specific factors (Ideation, Communication, Act/Planning) best explained SENTIA scores.
  • SENTIA demonstrated adequate reliability and no item bias based on gender.
  • SENTIA scores positively correlated with suicidal ideation, depression, behavioral problems, and psychotic-like experiences.

Conclusions:

  • SENTIA is a validated, user-friendly, and brief tool for assessing suicidal behavior in Spanish adolescents.
  • As a screening tool, SENTIA can facilitate the analysis, evaluation, understanding, and intervention of adolescent suicide.
