This study synthesized a novel Barium Yttrium Fluoride phosphor doped with Ytterbium and Holmium ions. This material demonstrates potential for non-contact optical temperature sensing applications.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Luminescence
- Optical Sensing
Background:
- Developing advanced phosphors for optical thermometry is crucial for non-contact temperature measurements.
- Barium Yttrium Fluoride (BaY2F8) doped with rare-earth ions offers unique luminescent properties.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize a BaY2F8:Yb3+, Ho3+ phosphor.
- To investigate its temperature-sensing capabilities using fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method.
Main Methods:
- Simple precipitation method for phosphor synthesis.
- Upconversion luminescence spectroscopy under 980 nm laser excitation.
- Analysis of fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) from thermally coupled Ho3+ energy levels (5F4 and 5S2).
Main Results:
- The synthesized BaY2F8:Yb3+, Ho3+ phosphor exhibited temperature-dependent upconversion luminescence.
- Emission peaks at 538 nm (5F4 → 5I8) and 549 nm (5S2 → 5I8) were observed.
- The FIR of Ho3+ emissions showed sensitivity to temperature variations in the range of 303-623 K.
Conclusions:
- The BaY2F8:Yb3+, Ho3+ phosphor is a promising candidate for optical thermometry.
- Its temperature-sensing performance is based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of Ho3+ emissions.
- Potential application as a non-contact optical temperature sensor was demonstrated.
