Summary

Thawed Solvent/Detergent-treated Plasma (T-S/D) is as effective as Thawed Plasma (TP) for treating coagulopathies. This study found no significant differences in transfusion outcomes or laboratory value correction between the two plasma types.

Background:

  • Thawed Plasma (TP) is a standard transfusion product.
  • Thawed Solvent/Detergent-treated Plasma (T-S/D) is a newer alternative.
  • This study compares the efficacy of T-S/D to TP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if T-S/D is as efficacious as TP.
  • To compare T-S/D and TP in reversing coagulopathies.
  • To evaluate clinical outcomes associated with T-S/D versus TP.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort analysis of adult patients.
  • Comparison of transfusion data between TP and T-S/D recipients.
  • Primary outcome: incidence of subsequent transfusions within 24 hours.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in subsequent transfusions or blood product use.
  • Similar correction of coagulation laboratory values (INR, PT/aPTT).
  • T-S/D median volume transfused was 126 mL less than TP.

Conclusions:

  • T-S/D is as efficacious as TP for treating coagulopathies.
