Frailty is strongly associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) in Chinese elderly men. Comprehensive frailty assessments are crucial for addressing sexual health in older men with ED.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology and Sexual Health
- Epidemiology of Aging
Background:
- Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common health concern among aging populations.
- Frailty is increasingly recognized as a significant geriatric syndrome impacting overall health and quality of life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between frailty and erectile dysfunction (ED) in a sample of Chinese elderly men.
- To identify risk factors for ED in this demographic.
Main Methods:
- A community-based study involving 341 Chinese elderly men (aged 60-83).
- Participants completed questionnaires assessing demographics, medical and sexual history, frailty (Tilburg Frailty Indicator - TFI), and ED (International Index of Erectile Function-5 - IIEF-5).
Main Results:
- The prevalence of ED and frailty was high at 77.13% and 68.04%, respectively.
- ED was associated with increased age, diabetes, and higher TFI scores, and lower income and education.
- Independent risk factors for ED included age, diabetes, irregular intercourse, and TFI scores.
Conclusions:
- A significant association exists between frailty and ED in elderly Chinese men.
- Multidimensional frailty assessments are recommended for elderly men with ED to guide sexual healthcare interventions.
