Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

2.8K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

2.2K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Pharmacokinetics in Pediatric Patients: Drug Excretion

131
In pediatric medicine, understanding the renal function and drug elimination nuances is crucial for administering safe and effective treatments. Newborns, in particular, display markedly slower renal functions than adults, profoundly affecting how drugs are cleared from their bodies. This slower drug clearance requires clinicians to extend the dosing intervals for many medications to prevent drug accumulation and toxicity while ensuring therapeutic efficacy. One key area where these adjustments...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching II: Planning and Implementation

1.8K
Planning for learning involves the development of a teaching plan. Teaching plans are similar to nursing care plans—both follow the steps of the nursing process. Planning in the teaching process involves setting goals and outcomes. Here, goals identify what a patient needs to achieve to understand a healthcare topic better, whereas the outcomes are the action to be performed by the patient to achieve the goal within a timeframe. For example, if the goal is to educate the patient about...

Hospitals-I

1.4K
Hospitals offer medical and surgical care to the sick and injured, along with accommodation while they recover. At the same time, they also provide outpatient, emergency, psychiatric, and rehabilitation services to meet various community needs. In addition to providing medical care, hospitals also act as hubs for medical research and training. Hospitals use clinical procedures and evidence-based practice standards to deliver patient care. To deliver safe and efficient care, a nurse must stay up...

Hospitals-II

1.0K
Hospitals provide inpatient and outpatient services. Inpatient services provide care to patients that stay in the hospital for an extended period, ranging from days to months. Examples of inpatient services include intensive care units, hospital wards, or surgeries. Outpatient services provide care to patients who come to a hospital for a diagnostic or treatment but do not stay overnight —for example, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, or health education.
Nurses that work in...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Hospital Medicine
  • Medical Education
  • Professional Certification

Background:

  • The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) subboard established a need for a certification examination.
  • A practice analysis was crucial to develop a content outline for the inaugural PHM certification exam.
  • This study details the systematic approach used in the practice analysis process.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the development of a content outline for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine certification examination.
  • To outline the systematic practice analysis methodology employed by the ABP and PHM subboard.
  • To ensure the certification exam blueprint accurately reflects the scope of PHM practice.

Main Methods:

  • A panel of 12 pediatric hospitalists created a draft content outline using diverse resources.
  • Knowledge was categorized into 13 domains and 202 subdomains.
  • Practicing pediatric hospitalists identified via the ABP database rated the frequency and criticality of content areas.

Main Results:

  • 800 full-time pediatric hospitalists responded to the survey.
  • Content domains rated as highly critical and frequent were weighted more heavily in the exam blueprint.
  • Both community and non-community pediatric hospitalists showed high concordance in their ratings (P = .943).

Conclusions:

  • The practice analysis demonstrated concordance in domain and task ratings across different practice settings.
  • Minor differences in ratings were attributable to practice setting variations.
  • The structured, iterative practice analysis engaged the PHM community and accurately reflected the required knowledge base.
