Background:

Population aging necessitates technological solutions for elderly care.
Mobile applications are increasingly developed for elderly healthcare by interdisciplinary teams.
A comprehensive survey is lacking to guide professionals in developing these applications.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify the state-of-the-art in mobile applications for elderly healthcare.
To analyze these applications from both healthcare and software engineering perspectives.
To provide insights for future development and research in this field.

Main Methods:

A systematic mapping study was conducted by health and software engineering researchers.
Data from 149 selected papers were analyzed.
Classifications included target application, elderly profile, spatial-temporal distribution, validation techniques, and software engineering research type.

Main Results:

Most applications target independent elderly users and fall under WHO 'Clients and Data Services'.
No applications were found in the 'Health System Manager' category.
Studies predominantly originate from developed countries, with solutions often validated through controlled experiments and usability evaluations.

Conclusions:

The current landscape of mobile health applications for the elderly is skewed towards client-focused services.
There is a gap in applications designed for comprehensive health system management for seniors.
Future research should address this gap and consider broader geographical and functional applications.
