Background:

  • Rape is a leading cause of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women, increasing risks for suicide and other health issues.
  • Effective and rapid interventions are needed for this vulnerable population.
  • Previous US trials indicate brief prolonged exposure (PE) within 72 hours of trauma can reduce early PTSD symptoms in rape victims.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To adapt a brief PE protocol for the Swedish context.
  • To investigate the feasibility and delivery of early PE in rape victims at a Stockholm clinic.
  • To assess symptom reduction in participants receiving early PE.

Main Methods:

  • Adapted brief PE protocol implemented in three sessions.
  • Feasibility assessed via session attendance and homework compliance.
  • PTSD and depressive symptom reduction measured in 10 participants.

  • Successful participant engagement with high attendance and homework compliance.
