Insights
This report reviews COVID-19 in pregnant women, focusing on transmission risks for newborns. It summarizes current data for pediatric ophthalmologists to understand maternal and neonatal considerations.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Public Health
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased data collection on virus transmission, symptoms, and treatment.
- At-risk populations, including pregnant women, are a key focus for understanding disease impact.
- Pediatric ophthalmologists require updated information on COVID-19 in pregnancy for neonate care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To summarize current data on COVID-19 in pregnant and postpartum women.
- To elucidate potential transmission risks from mother to neonate.
- To provide relevant information for pediatric ophthalmologists regarding maternal-fetal and neonatal health during the pandemic.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of recent studies on COVID-19 in pregnancy.
- Analysis of reported data on transmission, symptomatology, and clinical course.
- Synthesis of information concerning mother and neonate considerations.
Main Results:
- Data on COVID-19 transmission, symptomatology, and clinical course in pregnant women is expanding.
- Specific trends and characteristics in this at-risk group are being identified.
- Information on maternal and neonatal considerations is crucial for risk assessment.
Conclusions:
- Understanding COVID-19's impact on pregnancy and the postpartum period is vital.
- Potential transmission risks to neonates require careful consideration.
- This summary aims to support pediatric ophthalmologists in managing cases involving neonates exposed to COVID-19.
Abstract:
With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the United States, more data is being reported on transmission, symptomatology, clinical course, and treatment of the virus. Research has focused on the trends and unique characteristics in at-risk populations, including pregnant women. This report summarizes the current data on considerations in pregnancy and postpartum period for mother and neonate to elucidate potential transmission risks for pediatric ophthalmologists.
