Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Breast Cancer Care

Background:

  • Breast reconstruction is now standard for breast cancer patients.
  • Historically, oncologic concerns influenced reconstruction decisions.
  • Evolving understanding of breast cancer as a systemic disease has eased prior objections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review breast reconstruction options.
  • To examine the relationship between reconstruction and oncologic decisions.
  • To address patient prognosis concerns related to breast reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of breast reconstruction outcomes.
  • Analysis of oncologic treatment interactions with reconstruction.
  • Discussion of reconstructive techniques and oncologic considerations.

Main Results:

  • Breast reconstruction does not appear to alter patient prognosis.
  • Reconstruction is feasible after most mastectomy types.
  • Chemotherapy is generally compatible with reconstruction, with timing considerations.
  • Therapeutic radiation can present challenges, potentially precluding reconstruction.

Conclusions:

  • Breast reconstruction is a safe and established procedure in breast cancer management.
  • Reconstruction does not impede future chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
  • Careful consideration of radiation therapy is necessary when planning reconstruction.
