Summary

Human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling is highly acceptable for cervical cancer screening among Greek women. Improved communication about the process and its effectiveness can further increase acceptance.

Background:

  • Cervical cancer screening effectiveness can be enhanced by Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-DNA testing combined with self-sampling.
  • Self-sampling offers a sensitive screening modality with an easy, minimally invasive method, but its acceptability is crucial for implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the acceptability of HPV self-sampling among Greek women in rural areas.
  • To identify factors influencing the acceptance of self-sampling for cervical cancer screening.

Main Methods:

  • A nested cross-sectional survey was conducted within the GRECOSELF study.
  • 13,111 women aged 25-60 years, recruited by midwives, completed a questionnaire on demographics, screening history, and self-sampling experience.

Main Results:

  • A majority (67.9%) preferred self-sampling if results were non-inferior to standard testing.
  • 97.1% reported no or minimal pain, and 96.5% reported no or minimal discomfort during self-sampling.
  • 74.4% felt confident in correctly following instructions; home-based self-sampling was preferred over clinic-based procedures.

Conclusions:

  • HPV self-sampling demonstrates high acceptability for cervical cancer screening in the studied population.
  • Acceptance can be enhanced through clear communication regarding the self-sampling process and its non-inferiority to conventional screening methods.
