The auditory ossicles of the middle ear transmit sounds from the air as vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea. The auditory ossicles consist of two malleus (hammer) bones, two incus (anvil) bones, and two stapes (stirrups), one on each side. These bones develop during the fetal stage and are the ones to ossify first. They are fully mature at birth and do not grow afterward.

Summary

An adhesive adapter prosthesis (AAP) improved memory functions in children with single-sided hearing loss (SSHL). While improvements were noted, memory function did not fully normalize compared to hearing peers after one month.

Background:

  • Single-sided hearing loss (SSHL) in children can impact cognitive functions, including memory.
  • Restoring bilateral hearing may offer cognitive benefits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of an adhesive adapter prosthesis (AAP) in improving memory functions in pediatric subjects with SSHL.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 19 pediatric subjects with SSHL treated with AAP and 15 age-matched controls.
  • Memory functions (working and short-term) were assessed in silence and noise conditions.
  • SSHL subjects were tested before AAP application and at a 1-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • AAP significantly improved working memory in noise and short-term memory at 1-month follow-up compared to baseline in SSHL subjects.
  • Despite improvements, memory function scores in SSHL subjects remained significantly lower than in the control group.
  • Improvements were observed in children with mild, moderate, and moderate-severe SSHL.

Conclusions:

  • AAP shows potential in enhancing memory functions in pediatric SSHL patients.
  • Full restoration of memory functions to levels comparable to hearing peers was not achieved within 1 month.
  • Further research with extended follow-up periods is warranted to assess long-term effects.
