An 8-week Internet-based intervention (IBI) for psychosis significantly reduced symptom severity compared to usual care. This cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach shows promise in improving access to psychological treatments for psychosis.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Digital Health
Background:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is recommended for psychosis but faces poor implementation in routine care.
- A significant gap exists in accessing psychological treatments for individuals with psychosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of an 8-week, Internet-based intervention (IBI) for psychosis.
- To compare the IBI against care as usual in a randomized controlled trial.
Main Methods:
- 101 participants with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were randomized to an IBI or a wait-list control.
- The primary outcome was a composite score measuring psychotic symptom severity.
Main Results:
- The IBI group showed a greater decrease in psychotic symptom severity compared to the wait-list group (p = .047).
- Participants reported high satisfaction (89%) with the intervention.
- Adverse events were infrequent (4.9%).
Conclusions:
- Internet-based, CBT-oriented interventions can augment standard care for psychosis.
- IBIs hold potential to reduce the disparity in psychological treatment access for psychosis.
