Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate changes in physical activity and nutrition knowledge among low-income elementary and middle school students participating in a CSPAP.
  • To examine the program's effectiveness across different grade levels.

Main Methods:

  • A convenience sample of 789 students (grades 4-6) from five low-income Title I schools participated.
  • Physical activity and nutrition knowledge were assessed at baseline and after a 36-week CSPAP intervention.
  • Data were analyzed using a doubly multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA).

Main Results:

  • Physical activity knowledge scores significantly improved post-intervention (p=0.045, Cohen's d=0.18).
  • Older students (grades 5-6) demonstrated greater improvements in physical activity knowledge than 4th graders (p=0.044, Cohen's d=0.33).
  • No significant improvements in nutrition knowledge were observed (p=0.150).

Conclusions:

  • Multicomponent school-based interventions like CSPAP can enhance physical activity knowledge in children.
  • Improvements in physical activity knowledge, particularly in older students, may positively influence health behaviors and outcomes.
  • Further research is needed to explore nutrition knowledge improvements and long-term behavioral changes.
