Background:

Postpartum psychiatric disorders, ranging from maternity blues to major depression, are common following childbirth.
Significant endocrinologic changes occur after childbirth, yet their link to affective disturbances is not fully understood.
The role of breastfeeding and weaning in postpartum mental health remains understudied.

Observation:

Breastfeeding and weaning involve substantial hormonal shifts.
These hormonal changes may influence maternal mood and psychiatric well-being.
Four patient cases illustrate major depression developing around the time of weaning.

Findings:

Evidence suggests a hormonal basis for postpartum psychiatric disorders.
Breastfeeding and weaning practices may precipitate or exacerbate depressive symptoms.
Weaning appears to be a potential trigger for major depressive episodes in susceptible individuals.

Implications:

Further research into the hormonal mechanisms of postpartum depression is warranted.
Clinical attention to breastfeeding and weaning practices may aid in preventing postpartum mood disorders.
Understanding the endocrine-lactational-mood axis can improve maternal mental healthcare.
