Summary

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) improves shoulder joint position sense (JPS) compared to the contralateral shoulder. This suggests rTSA can restore proprioception, enhancing shoulder function after surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate shoulder joint position sense (JPS) in patients following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) for cuff arthropathy.
  • To compare JPS in rTSA-operated shoulders with contralateral non-operated shoulders and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-nine patients undergoing unilateral rTSA and 31 healthy volunteers were assessed for shoulder JPS.
  • A high-accuracy electronic goniometer was used to measure the error of active reproduction of joint position (EARJP) at various reference positions.

Main Results:

  • Shoulders following rTSA demonstrated significantly better JPS (lower EARJP) compared to the contralateral non-operated shoulder.
  • JPS in rTSA shoulders was comparable to that of healthy control shoulders across multiple movement planes and angles.

  • Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) appears to restore shoulder proprioception.
  • Improved JPS after rTSA may be attributed to enhanced joint kinematics, stability, and subsequent muscular performance and proprioceptive feedback.
