Background:

  • Sleep deprivation is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
  • Sleep deprivation negatively impacts cardiovascular function, including flow-mediated dilation (FMD).
  • High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) has shown potential to improve postprandial FMD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the combined effects of acute-partial sleep deprivation (APSD) and HIIE on postprandial FMD.
  • To determine if HIIE can mitigate the negative cardiovascular impacts of APSD.
  • To assess the interaction between sleep status and exercise intensity on vascular function.

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen healthy males underwent three conditions: reference sleep (RS), RS with HIIE (RSX), and acute-partial sleep deprivation with HIIE (SSX).
  • HIIE involved 3:2 minute intervals at 90% and 40% of VO2 reserve.
  • Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was measured before and after interventions, including 1 and 4 hours post-exercise.

Main Results:

  • Both RSX and SSX showed improved FMD compared to RS alone at 1 hour post-exercise.
  • No significant difference in FMD was observed between RSX and SSX at 1 hour post-exercise, though SSX tended to elicit greater responses.
  • Absolute FMD changes were significantly lower in RS compared to both RSX and SSX at 1 hour post-exercise.

Conclusions:

  • High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) demonstrates short-term cardioprotective effects on vascular function.
  • These cardioprotective benefits of HIIE are maintained even following acute-partial sleep deprivation.
  • HIIE may be a viable strategy to support cardiovascular health in individuals experiencing sleep restriction.
