Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells that can differentiate into most connective tissue cell types, except for hematopoietic cells, depending upon the source of MSCs. Summary

Pregnant women with multiple sclerosis (MS) show increased levels of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) compared to healthy controls. These higher EPC levels in MS patients follow the same pregnancy-related trend and correlate with cord blood levels.

Background:

  • Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are crucial for placentation and their levels change during pregnancy.
  • Reduced EPCs are linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes like preeclampsia.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients do not have higher risks for preeclampsia or general adverse obstetric outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare circulating EPC levels in pregnant women with MS versus healthy pregnant women.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal detection of CD34+ and CD133+ EPCs using flow cytometry.
  • Analysis of maternal plasma from 29 healthy controls and 9 MS patients.
  • Analysis of cord blood from newborns of both groups.

Main Results:

  • Circulating EPC levels (CD34+ and CD133+) increased during pregnancy in both MS patients and healthy controls, showing a similar trend.
  • Significantly higher levels of CD34+ and CD133+ EPCs were observed in pregnant MS patients compared to healthy controls.

Conclusions:

  • Pregnant women with MS exhibit elevated circulating EPC levels compared to healthy pregnant women.
  • The pregnancy-induced trend of EPC levels is consistent between MS patients and controls.
  • Maternal and cord blood EPC levels in MS pregnancies are correlated, suggesting a potential link in fetal development.
