Strategic planning: the practical vision.

Background:

Hospitals require robust strategic planning for continuous improvement.
Nursing departments must adapt to evolving healthcare demands.
Measuring the impact of strategic initiatives is crucial for success.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of a 5-year strategic plan in a nursing environment.
To assess the implementation rate of identified tactics.
To understand factors influencing tactic completion and their impact on nursing quality.

Main Methods:

A 5-year strategic plan was developed, identifying 29 tactics in year one.
Two 90-day 'victory calendars' were used to drive implementation.
Tactics were revised and new ones added in year two, with ongoing progress tracking.

Main Results:

17 out of 29 tactics were implemented in the first year.
Midway through the second year, 6 out of 30 revised/new tactics were completed.
Tactic completion was influenced by complexity, management turnover, and operational priorities.

Conclusions:

The strategic planning process itself is more significant than the number of completed tactics.
The process provides mechanisms to quantify and identify quality nursing care.
The initiative has positively impacted the perception of the nursing environment, fostering a culture of excellence.
