This study provides the first Bulgarian population norms for the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire, crucial for health-related quality of life assessments. These reference values will support future research and healthcare evaluations in Bulgaria.
Area of Science:
- Health Economics
- Public Health
- Psychometrics
Background:
- The EQ-5D-5L is a widely used instrument for measuring health-related quality of life.
- Normative data are essential for interpreting EQ-5D-5L scores in specific populations.
- Bulgaria lacked representative normative data for the EQ-5D-5L prior to this study.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish normative data for the EQ-5D-5L descriptive system and EQ VAS in Bulgaria.
- To provide a nationally representative dataset based on a random sample of the Bulgarian population.
- To facilitate the use of EQ-5D-5L in health research and policy within Bulgaria.
Main Methods:
- A nationally representative sample of 1005 Bulgarian adults (18-89 years) was surveyed.
- Data were collected using self-administered paper-based EQ-5D-5L questionnaires and the EQ VAS.
- Health state utility index scores were calculated using the Polish value set.
Main Results:
- The sample was representative across demographic variables (age, sex, region, education, status).
- Mean EQ-5D-5L index and EQ VAS scores declined with increasing age.
- Pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression were the most frequently reported issues; self-care limitations were least common but highest in frequency compared to other norm studies.
Conclusions:
- The developed Bulgarian normative data for the EQ-5D-5L and EQ VAS are now available for use.
- These norms serve as valuable reference points for health-related quality of life studies in Bulgaria.
- The availability of these data is expected to increase the application of the EQ-5D-5L in the country.
