Objective:
To synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of multidisciplinary self-management interventions for glycaemic control in people with type 1 diabetes.
Introduction:
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease. Self-management education led by a multidisciplinary team facilitates those with diabetes to acquire the necessary knowledge and skillset to improve their outcomes and quality of life.
Inclusion Criteria:
This review will consider studies on people aged 16 years and over with type 1 diabetes, investigating the effectiveness of multidisciplinary self-management interventions. The primary outcome of interest is glycemic control as measured by glycated hemoglobin levels. Secondary outcomes include quality of life as measured by validated screening tools and adverse outcomes, such as number of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis events.
Methods:
This review will consider all quantitative study designs. Studies published in English since 2009 will be considered. MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL (via EBSCO), Embase (via embase.com), PsycINFO (via EBSCO) and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in the Cochrane Register of Studies (via Cochrane Library) will be searched. Sources of unpublished studies and gray literature to be searched include ProQuest Dissertations and Theses and Google Scholar. Titles and abstracts will be screened by two independent reviewers, with disagreements resolved through discussion or with a third reviewer. Eligible studies will be critically appraised for methodological quality using standardized critical appraisal instruments from JBI. Data extraction and synthesis will follow methods outlined by JBI.
