Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT01:30

Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT

907
Radiological investigations, including X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, are critical for diagnosing and evaluating various medical conditions. These imaging techniques provide valuable insights into the body's internal structures, aiding in the detection of abnormalities, assessment of disease progression, and development of treatment strategies. This article delves into two primary radiological investigations, chest X-rays and CT scans, outlining their purpose, procedures, and...

Imaging Studies I: CT and MRI

667
Introduction: MRI and CT scans are crucial advancements in medical imaging techniques, playing a vital role in diagnosing conditions related to the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Each scan serves distinct purposes, targets specific areas, and requires unique nursing duties.
Description of the Procedures
Computed Tomography (CT) scan:
Computed Tomography (CT) scans use X-ray technology to generate detailed images of bones, organs, and tissues. During the scan, the patient lies on a moving table...

Imaging Studies IV: Magnetic Resonance Imaging

166
Introduction:Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, can include a specialized imaging technique of the urinary system known as Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU). This radiation-free technique uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images with the help of a computer. MRU is particularly effective for visualizing fluid-filled structures like the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.Applications of MRI in the Genitourinary SystemKidneys and Ureters: MRI detects tumors, cysts,...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

303
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan

394
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System III: X-Ray

394
The most common cardiovascular diagnostic test is an X-ray. It produces images of the heart, blood vessels, and adjacent structures.
Definition and Purpose
An X-ray, or radiograph, is a non-invasive method that uses ionizing radiation to take images of internal structures. It is mainly used in cardiac imaging to examine the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels, aiming to identify abnormalities in the heart's size, shape, and position, such as heart failure, congenital defects, and vascular...

Summary

Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) requires careful evaluation of breast disorders during pregnancy and lactation. Timely diagnosis and biopsy are crucial, especially for BI-RADS 3, 4, and 5 lesions, to exclude PABC.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology

Background:

  • Breast disorders during pregnancy and lactation necessitate thorough assessment.
  • While often benign, these conditions require excluding pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC), which is frequently diagnosed late.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline diagnostic strategies for breast disorders during pregnancy and lactation.
  • To emphasize the importance of excluding PABC and guide management based on imaging and biopsy.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrasound (US) as the first-line imaging technique.
  • Mammography and breast MRI for further assessment of suspicious findings.
  • Biopsy for BI-RADS 3, 4, and 5 lesions when diagnostic doubt persists.

Main Results:

  • Benign lesions can mimic malignancy during pregnancy/lactation due to imaging overlaps.
  • PABC may not always present with typical malignant imaging features.
  • Biopsy is essential for definitive diagnosis in equivocal cases.

Conclusions:

  • Careful evaluation of all breast disorders during pregnancy and lactation is critical.
  • A combination of imaging modalities and biopsy is necessary to accurately diagnose and manage PABC.
  • Timely intervention based on precise lesion analysis and BI-RADS classification improves outcomes.
