Background:

  • Individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) exhibit low physical activity (PA) levels and accelerated aging.
  • Poor adherence to PA interventions in persons with ID is often linked to motivational barriers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of continuous aerobic exercise programs (CAEP) versus sprint interval training (SIT) on health-related physical fitness.
  • To assess the effects of CAEP and SIT on cardiovascular parameters, quality of life (QoL), and cognitive function in seniors with ID.

Main Methods:

  • Ninety seniors with ID (aged 40-75) were recruited and randomly assigned to CAEP, SIT, or a control group.
  • Intervention groups trained 3 days/week for 6 months, with outcomes assessed at baseline, 6, and 12 months.
  • Outcome variables included body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, balance, flexibility, cardiovascular measures, QoL, and cognitive function.

Main Results:

  • Previous research indicates CAEP and SIT positively influence body composition, fitness, and blood pressure in persons with ID.
  • This trial is the first to specifically analyze the combined effects of CAEP and SIT on fitness, PA levels, cardiovascular health, QoL, and cognition in seniors with ID.

  • Findings will inform the development of more effective exercise interventions for seniors with ID.
  • Improved exercise interventions aim to enhance compliance and adherence, leading to better health outcomes.
