Summary

Malignancy-associated lactic acidosis is a rare but serious condition. Prompt chemotherapy can reverse it, but long-term survival depends on the tumor's response.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Lactic acidosis is a rare, often fatal, complication of malignancy.
  • Defined by pH <= 7.35 and serum lactate >= 5 mEq/L.

Observation:

  • Four cases of malignancy-associated lactic acidosis are presented.
  • A review of all reported cases meeting diagnostic criteria was conducted.

Findings:

  • Rapid recognition and prompt chemotherapy reversed lactic acidosis in 3 of 4 patients.
  • Long-term survival is contingent upon the underlying tumor's responsiveness to treatment.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing malignancy-associated lactic acidosis.
  • Treatment efficacy is directly linked to tumor chemosensitivity.
  • Further research into managing this oncologic emergency is warranted.
