Purpose of the Study:

  • A large cohort of 5590 healthy Korean children and adolescents (aged 4-17) was recruited.
  • Regression analyses (simple and multiple) were used to predict Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), Maximum Mid-expiratory Flow (MMEF), and Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR).
  • Age, height, and weight were utilized as predictor variables in the regression models.

Main Results:

  • Significant correlations were found between demographic variables and spirometric parameters (P < 0.001).
  • Prediction equations derived from height and other variables showed higher accuracy (R² values) than height-only equations.
  • FEV1 demonstrated the highest R² value, indicating robust prediction.
  • Male spirometric values were generally higher than female values, with the exception of MMEF.

Conclusions:

  • Updated regression equations for spirometry were successfully developed for Korean children and adolescents.
  • These equations provide more accurate predicted values for lung function assessment in this demographic.
  • The findings contribute to improved diagnosis and management of respiratory conditions in pediatric populations in Korea.
