Background:

  • Accidental outdoor fall injuries (AOFIs) pose a significant public health burden.
  • Understanding environmental risk factors is crucial for effective prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between weather conditions and the incidence of medically-treated, non-fatal AOFIs.
  • To analyze seasonal variations in AOFIs and their primary causes.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the Shenkursk Injury Registry (SHIR) spanning January 2015 to June 2018 (N=1125).
  • Employed negative binomial and zero-inflated Poisson regression models for cold and warm seasons, respectively.
  • Analyzed daily AOFIs in relation to meteorological data.

Main Results:

  • Mean daily AOFIs were 1.7 times higher in the cold season (1.10) than the warm season (0.65).
  • Slipping was the primary cause of AOFIs in the cold season (83%), while stepping wrong/stumbling dominated in the warm season (49%).
  • Peak incidence in the cold season occurred with snow cover, temperatures between -7.0°C and -0.7°C, and precipitation >0.4 mm.

Conclusions:

  • Weather conditions, especially snow and cold temperatures, significantly increase the risk of AOFIs.
  • Targeted public health warnings based on weather forecasts can be an effective AOFI prevention tool.
