Experimental RNAi02:15

Experimental RNAi

7.0K
RNA interference (RNAi) is a cellular mechanism that inhibits gene expression by suppressing its transcription or activating the RNA degradation process. The mechanism was discovered by Andrew Fire and Craig Mello in 1998 in plants. Today, it is observed in almost all eukaryotes, including protozoa, flies, nematodes, insects, parasites, and mammals. This precise cellular mechanism of gene silencing has been developed into a technique that provides an efficient way to identify and determine the...

Red Algae01:23

Red Algae

576
Red algae, also known as rhodophytes, are primarily found in marine environments, though some species inhabit freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. These organisms exist in both unicellular and multicellular forms, with some multicellular varieties reaching macroscopic sizes. As phototrophic organisms, red algae contain chlorophyll a; however, their chloroplasts lack chlorophyll b. Instead, they possess phycobiliproteins, which serve as major light-harvesting pigments, similar to those found in...

Summary

Rooibos tea is generally safe but can rarely cause liver injury. Clinicians should consider Rooibos-induced liver damage in patients with acute hepatitis.

Area of Science:

  • Herbal medicine
  • Hepatology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a popular herbal tea globally, recognized for its antioxidant properties.
  • It is widely consumed and generally considered safe, with potential liver-protective effects attributed to its free radical scavenging compounds.

Observation:

  • A rare case of severe liver injury was observed in a patient consuming Rooibos.
  • The patient presented with symptoms consistent with acute hepatitis.

Findings:

  • The liver injury was directly attributed to Rooibos consumption.
  • This suggests a potential, albeit uncommon, hepatotoxicity associated with Rooibos.

Implications:

  • Rooibos-induced hepatotoxicity may be underdiagnosed in clinical practice.
  • Healthcare providers should maintain a high index of suspicion for Rooibos as a potential cause of acute hepatitis.
  • Further investigation into the mechanisms and prevalence of Rooibos hepatotoxicity is warranted.
