Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of institutional administrative data for characterizing clinical research activity.
  • To assess the inclusion of special populations in clinical research.
  • To determine if study type, initiation, and completion varied by participant age.

Main Methods:

  • Review of institutional review board-approved clinical studies from January 1, 2014, to November 2, 2016.
  • Utilized the research navigator system for study protocol and participant characteristic data.
  • Classified studies as observational or interventional; employed descriptive statistics for analysis.

Main Results:

  • 22%-24% of studies included children; 4%-5% focused exclusively on pediatrics.
  • 64%-72% included older adults (>65 years); 5%-12% focused exclusively on geriatrics.
  • 85% included both sexes; studies for women were 3x more common than for men; 56%-58% focused on nonvulnerable patients.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric participants were most frequently studied but less likely to enroll than older adults.
  • Interventional studies comprised 20% of the total, with 20%-35% of participants from vulnerable populations.
  • Women's health research is more prevalent than men's health research.
