Summary

Digital panoramic radiography dose can be reduced without compromising diagnostic quality. Lower radiation exposure levels are achievable for dental X-rays, enhancing patient safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of low-dose digital panoramic radiography protocols.
  • To estimate the absorbed radiation dose in the head and neck region.

Main Methods:

  • Six digital panoramic radiography protocols with varying tube voltages (kVp) and currents (mA) were tested on imaging phantoms.
  • Oral radiologists assessed image quality and diagnostic findings.
  • Absorbed doses were measured using thermoluminescent dosimeters in a Rando phantom.

Main Results:

  • Diagnostic performance did not significantly differ across low-dose protocols compared to the highest dose protocol.
  • Substantial agreement in diagnostic findings was observed among all protocols.
  • Protocols 4, 5, and 6 demonstrated significantly lower absorbed doses than Protocol 1.

Conclusions:

  • Radiation dose in digital panoramic radiography can be further reduced without compromising overall diagnostic performance.
  • Lower exposure levels are feasible for digital panoramic radiographs, minimizing risks associated with X-rays.
