  • Placenta previa is a known pregnancy complication with documented maternal risk factors.
  • Limited research exists on maternal characteristics linked to the persistence of placenta previa.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify maternal characteristics associated with persistent placenta previa.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of 705 pregnant women diagnosed with low-lying placenta or placenta previa.
  • Analysis included women from 17-24 weeks gestation, excluding abnormal placentation or early delivery.
  • Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine significant maternal factors.

Main Results:

  • Prior cesarean delivery increased the likelihood of persistent placenta previa seven-fold (OR 7.0).
  • History of intrauterine curettage/evacuation nearly tripled the risk (OR 2.5).

Conclusions:

  • Prior cesarean delivery and intrauterine surgeries are significant risk factors for persistent placenta previa.
  • This study is the largest to date assessing these factors and the first to link intrauterine surgeries to persistent placenta previa.
