Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation V: Advanced Airway Management Techniques

321
Airway management is essential in emergency and surgical medicine, ensuring ventilation and oxygenation in patients who cannot maintain their own airway. Clinicians use a range of techniques and devices to secure the airway, depending on the patient’s condition and the clinical context. Key methods include endotracheal intubation, rapid sequence intubation (RSI), supraglottic airway devices, and advanced visualization aids. In cases where these approaches fail, surgical airway...

Tracheostomy Care I: Pre-procedural Steps

698
A tracheostomy is a surgical technique that involves making an incision in the neck to provide access to the trachea. It is frequently used in medical conditions such as airway obstruction and prolonged mechanical ventilation. Effective nursing management is crucial for the long-term success of a tracheostomy.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Simulation
  • Emergency Medicine Training

Background:

  • Cricothyroidotomy is a rare, advanced, life-saving procedure that is difficult to master.
  • Developing proficiency requires effective and accessible training methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a low-cost simulation model for cricothyroidotomy training.
  • To assess the model's effectiveness in teaching cricothyroidotomy skills to student paramedics.

Main Methods:

  • A cricothyroidotomy simulation model was used with 57 second-year student paramedics.
  • Performance was assessed using a 13-step checklist, with scores ranging from 0 to 2.
  • Statistical analysis included correlation between procedure time and total scores.

Main Results:

  • Students completed the procedure in an average of 116 seconds, with an average performance score of 12 out of 24.
  • A significant negative correlation was found between procedure time and performance score (r=-0.403, P=0.002).

Conclusions:

  • The developed simulation model is an inexpensive and effective tool for cricothyroidotomy training.
  • Repeated use of the model is anticipated to enhance student success rates in performing the procedure.
