Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

173
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Health
    • Public Health
    • Sociology

    Background:

    • Physical activity (PA) is crucial for child health, yet PA patterns in immigrant children remain understudied.
    • Understanding PA in this demographic is essential for targeted health interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review and synthesize existing research on physical activity patterns among primary-school-aged immigrant children.
    • To identify factors associated with physical activity levels in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • A systematic review of peer-reviewed articles published between January 2010 and May 2018.
    • Inclusion criteria focused on primary-school-aged children (6-12 years) with data on immigration status, published in English, French, or Spanish.

    Main Results:

    • Eleven articles revealed a general deficit in PA among immigrant children.
    • Immigration status, generation, ethnic origin (Hispanic, East Asian), and gender (girls) were associated with lower PA levels.
    • Questionnaire-based PA measures may be inaccurate for immigrant children, suggesting a need for mixed methods.

    Conclusions:

    • Immigrant children, particularly first-generation and girls, may face greater challenges meeting PA guidelines.
    • Future research should incorporate time since immigration, detailed demographic/socioeconomic factors, and mixed methodologies for a comprehensive understanding.
