Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Surgical technology

Background:

  • Patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) enhances surgical precision.
  • Software is essential for PSI's preoperative planning and instrument design.
  • Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) benefits from accurate instrumentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the methodology for developing a software tool for PSI guide design.
  • To enable preoperative planning for reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) using custom guides.
  • To demonstrate the functionality of developed PSI software in RSA.

Main Methods:

  • Data preparation and feature transformation algorithms.
  • Development of algorithms for custom surgical guide geometry creation.
  • Integration of various software libraries for PSI tool development.

Main Results:

  • The developed PSI software was tested on three patient cases.
  • Preoperative planning and custom guide design were successfully performed.
  • Manufactured guides were tested on patient bones for RSA, demonstrating functionality.

Conclusions:

  • The study validates the processes involved in developing PSI software.
  • The design of patient-specific guides for RSA using the software is proven effective.
  • The presented methodology facilitates PSI software development and custom guide creation for RSA.
