Physical activity access can mitigate health impacts from air pollution. This study found that while air and water pollution worsen health, opportunities for physical activity can lessen the negative effects of air pollution on residents' well-being.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Health
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Air and water pollution pose significant risks to public health.
- Opportunities for physical activity are associated with improved health outcomes.
- The moderating role of physical activity on pollution-health relationships requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine if physical activity opportunities moderate the associations between air and water pollution and various health measures.
- To understand the complex interplay between environmental exposures, physical activity, and population health.
Main Methods:
- Utilized aggregate county-level data from the United States (n = 3104).
- Measured air pollution (fine particulate matter), water pollution (drinking water violations), and health outcomes (overall, physical, mental health).
- Assessed access to physical activity (proximity to parks/recreation facilities).
Main Results:
- Both air and water pollution significantly increased adverse health outcomes.
- Increased physical activity opportunities were linked to better overall and physical health.
- Access to physical activity opportunities moderated the impact of air pollution on all measured health outcomes.
Conclusions:
- Physical activity access serves as a protective factor against air pollution's detrimental health effects.
- Enhancing physical activity opportunities is a viable environmental health policy strategy for mitigating pollution-related health burdens.
- Interventions promoting physical activity can complement pollution control measures in public health initiatives.
