Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Neuroscience
  • Motor Control

Background:

  • Cognitive training is increasingly popular in sports.
  • Longitudinal studies on cognitive training's effectiveness are scarce.
  • The impact on lower limb reaction performance needs further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effect of cognitive training with minimal motor involvement on lower limb choice-reaction performance.
  • To determine if cognitive training enhances specific reactive motor skills in athletes.

Main Methods:

  • 44 healthy adults were randomized into a cognitive training (CT) group or a control (CON) group.
  • The CT group underwent a 6-week computerized program targeting attention, reaction time, processing speed, and inhibition.
  • Lower limb choice-reaction time was measured pre- and post-intervention using the Quick Feet Board.

Main Results:

  • The CT group showed significantly better unilateral choice-reaction performance (p = 0.04, r = 0.31).
  • No significant differences were observed in the bilateral component of the reaction time test (p > .05).

Conclusions:

  • Off-court cognitive training can effectively enhance unilateral reactive motor skills in athletes.
  • Targeted cognitive interventions may offer a novel approach to athletic performance enhancement.
