Oogenesis02:07

Oogenesis

68.3K
In human women, oogenesis produces one mature egg cell or ovum for every precursor cell that enters meiosis. This process differs in two unique ways from the equivalent procedure of spermatogenesis in males. First, meiotic divisions during oogenesis are asymmetric, meaning that a large oocyte (containing most of the cytoplasm) and minor polar body are produced as a result of meiosis I, and again following meiosis II. Since only oocytes will go on to form embryos if fertilized, this unequal...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Mean oocyte diameter (MOD) can predict embryo quality. Oocytes with average MOD show higher rates of developing into good-quality embryos, aiding fertility preservation assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive biology
  • Embryology
  • Assisted reproductive technology (ART)

Background:

  • Oocyte vitrification is increasingly used for fertility preservation.
  • Predicting assisted reproductive technique (ART) success based on retrieved oocytes requires more data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if oocyte diameter predicts embryo quality.
  • To establish mean oocyte diameter (MOD) as a potential predictor for embryo grading.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, single-center cohort study of 471 cycles (3355 metaphase II oocytes).
  • Oocytes grouped by mean oocyte diameter (MOD) and incubated for 5 days.
  • Morphological evaluation of embryo quality by an expert embryologist.

Main Results:

  • Embryos from oocytes with average MOD showed increased good-quality blastulation rates.
  • Oocytes with MOD between 105.96–118.69 μm had a higher probability of becoming top-quality D5 blastocysts.
  • A significant correlation was found between MOD and embryo quality at day 5.

Conclusions:

  • Mean oocyte diameter (MOD) may serve as a predictor for embryo grading.
  • Oocytes with near-average MOD have a better chance of developing into good-quality embryos.
  • This finding can inform fertility preservation and ART success predictions.
