Relationship between Increased Intracranial Pressure and Mastoid Effusion

Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is likely linked to mastoid effusions (ME), a condition often seen after brain surgery. This study found a significant association between higher ICP levels and the development of ME.

- Hourly ICP data and clinical factors were collected; ME was identified via imaging.
- Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to assess predictors of ME.

- 61% of patients developed ME, with 94% showing ipsilateral effusion in unilateral brain lesions.
- Higher mean and peak ICP, age, trauma, CRP, ICU stay, mechanical ventilation, ETT, and NGT were associated with ME.
- ICP variables significantly improved ME prediction in multivariable analysis.
Conclusions:
- Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is a probable contributing factor to mastoid effusions (ME).
- Further research is required to elucidate the mechanistic link between ICP and middle ear pressure.
