Summary

Dietary guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) supplementation significantly increased muscle creatine levels in most individuals. This study identified 80% of participants as responders to GAA, highlighting its effectiveness for boosting creatine.

Background:

  • Dietary guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is linked to improved tissue bioenergetics.
  • Previous research has not quantified responder vs. non-responder populations after short-term GAA intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To classify individuals into responders and non-responders based on intramuscular creatine increase following short-term GAA supplementation.
  • To determine the proportion of responders, quasi-responders, and non-responders to dietary GAA.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary analysis of existing GAA trial data.
  • 30 participants supplemented with up to 3g/day of GAA for at least 28 days.
  • Intramuscular creatine content (total creatine + phosphocreatine) in the quadriceps muscle measured via 1.5T magnetic resonance spectroscopy pre- and post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • Average increase in total creatine content was 22.9% after GAA supplementation (p < .001).
  • 80.0% of participants were classified as responders (>10% increase).
  • 13.3% were non-responders (<5% increase) and 6.6% were quasi-responders (5%-10% increase).

Conclusions:

  • A high prevalence (80%) of individuals respond to dietary GAA, showing >10% increase in muscle creatine.
  • Dietary GAA is an effective agent for increasing muscle creatine levels within 28 days.
  • This suggests GAA is a promising supplement for enhancing muscle creatine.
