Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the relationship between asthma and the prevalence of IHD and stroke.
  • To identify specific subgroups of asthmatic patients at higher risk for these cardiovascular conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of 173,209 participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study-Health Examinees.
  • Asthma, IHD, and stroke histories were collected. Asthma management status (well-controlled, being treated, not being treated) was assessed.
  • Multiple logistic regression models were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for IHD and stroke.

Main Results:

  • Asthma patients showed a significantly higher prevalence of IHD (6.0% vs 3.0%) and stroke (2.3% vs 1.4%) compared to non-asthmatic individuals.
  • A higher OR for IHD was observed in asthmatic participants (OR=1.46). This association was significant in individuals aged ≥53 years and in the 'not being treated' asthma group.
  • No significant association was found between asthma and stroke in the adjusted model or subgroup analyses.

Conclusions:

  • Asthma is associated with an increased risk of IHD, especially in older age groups and among those with untreated asthma.
  • The study did not find a significant link between asthma and stroke.
  • Findings highlight the importance of asthma management in mitigating cardiovascular risks.
