Overview of Exosomes01:36

Overview of Exosomes

3.3K
Exosomes are stable, lipid bilayer-enclosed vesicles capable of crossing biological barriers. They can carry a wide range of molecules required for intercellular communication. Once exosomes are released from the cell where they originated, they enter a recipient cell through various pathways such as fusion, receptor-mediated endocytosis, macropinocytosis, and phagocytosis.
Stahl et al. discovered exosomes in 1983, but the exosomes were initially considered waste products released from the...

Renal Tubule and Collecting Duct01:24

Renal Tubule and Collecting Duct

2.7K
The renal tubule is divided into three parts: the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), the Loop of Henle (LOH), and the distal convoluted tubule (DCT).
Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT):
The PCT is the initial segment of the renal tubule, extending from the Bowman's capsule that encloses the glomerulus. Its convoluted structure and microvilli-lined cells increase the surface area for reabsorption. The PCT reabsorbs glucose, amino acids, sodium, and water from the filtrate, ensuring essential...

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Biomarker Discovery
  • Cell Biology

Background:

  • Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are increasingly recognized for their role in intercellular communication.
  • EVs are being investigated as potential diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic biomarkers in various kidney diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current understanding of extracellular vesicles in kidney physiology and disease.
  • To highlight the utility of EVs as biomarkers for renal conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of recent studies on extracellular vesicles in kidney research.
  • Analysis of findings related to urinary and circulating EVs.

Main Results:

  • Urinary EVs show potential for detecting dysfunction in renal endothelial cells, tubular cells, and podocytes.
  • Recent studies indicate urinary EVs may aid in early diagnosis and monitoring of acute kidney injury, glomerular diseases, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, and urinary tract malignancies.
  • Circulating EVs may serve as biomarkers for cardiovascular disease assessment.

Conclusions:

  • Urinary and circulating extracellular vesicles are of significant interest as potential biomarkers for renal diseases.
  • Extracellular vesicle analysis offers a diagnostic approach for nephrologists and insights into disease pathophysiology.
