Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix presents unique diagnostic challenges.
  • Its biologic behavior is considered intermediate between appendiceal carcinoid tumors and well-differentiated adenocarcinoma.
  • The histogenesis of GCC remains a subject of ongoing research and debate.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the characteristics of goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix.
  • To discuss its diagnostic features and histogenesis.
  • To evaluate the prognosis and treatment of this appendiceal tumor.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix.
  • Analysis of histological features.
  • Evaluation of clinical behavior and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix exhibits distinctive histological features aiding diagnosis.
  • The tumor's biologic behavior is intermediate, posing diagnostic considerations.
  • Histogenesis is not fully established.

Conclusions:

  • Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix is a distinct entity with specific histological characteristics.
  • Simple appendectomy is the recommended treatment for most cases.
  • The prognosis for patients treated with appendectomy is generally favorable.
