Summary

Hyperuricemia, a condition of high serum uric acid, is significantly associated with ischemic stroke. Patients with ischemic stroke have a 3.41 times higher risk of hyperuricemia compared to healthy individuals.

Background:

  • Hyperuricemia is a metabolic condition characterized by elevated serum uric acid (SUA) levels.
  • Elevated SUA levels have been implicated in various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between hyperuricemia and acute ischemic stroke.
  • To determine the risk of hyperuricemia in patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted involving 100 participants (50 ischemic stroke patients and 50 healthy controls).
  • Serum uric acid levels were measured using photometry upon admission.
  • Hyperuricemia was defined as an SUA level exceeding 6 mg/dl.

Main Results:

  • Mean SUA levels were significantly higher in ischemic stroke patients (5.996 ±1.99 mg/dl) compared to controls (5.042 ±0.91 mg/dl).
  • Hyperuricemia was present in 46% of ischemic stroke patients versus 20% of controls.
  • The odds of hyperuricemia were 3.41 times greater in ischemic stroke patients (p=0.006).

Conclusions:

  • Serum uric acid levels are significantly elevated in patients with ischemic stroke.
  • Hyperuricemia represents a significant risk factor for ischemic stroke.
