Summary

Nutritional anemia is linked to a higher risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). This study found that individuals with SSNHL had increased odds of prior nutritional anemia, but hemoglobin levels were not associated.

Background:

  • Previous research suggests a link between anemia and hearing loss.
  • Nutritional anemia's specific association with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) remains under-explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between nutritional anemia and the risk of developing SSNHL.
  • To determine if hemoglobin levels are also associated with SSNHL risk.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort (2002-2015).
  • Matched case-control study comparing 9393 SSNHL patients with 37,572 controls.
  • Conditional logistic regression used to assess the odds of prior nutritional anemia and hemoglobin levels in SSNHL patients, adjusting for covariates.

Main Results:

  • Nutritional anemia was more prevalent in SSNHL patients (4.8%) than in controls (4.0%), with significantly higher odds (OR=1.20).
  • Hemoglobin levels showed no association with SSNHL.
  • A positive association between nutritional anemia and SSNHL was observed in individuals under 60 years old.

Conclusions:

  • Nutritional anemia is associated with an increased risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
  • Hemoglobin levels do not appear to be a significant factor in SSNHL risk.
  • Targeting nutritional anemia may be a potential strategy for SSNHL prevention, particularly in younger demographics.
